Disable automatic reboot after update on Windows 10

Problem

Windows 10 automatically reboots after it automatically installs Windows updates even when one is logged in and may have unsaved work.

Solution

  • Open the Local Group Policy Editor by running gpedit.msc as Administrator (Note gpedit.msc is only available in the Pro and Enterprise Editions of Windows 10)
  • Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
  • Double click on the setting “No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installation” to modify
  • Click on “Enabled” to have your system not reboot after installing Windows Updates. If you want to undo this in the future, simply change it back to “Not Configured.”

Or, you can also perform this by modifying the Windows registry. See https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/disable-forced-restarts-windows-update/.

My System Configuration

  • Windows 10 Pro Version 1803 Build 17134.472
